Like a TV remote, I have different channels inside me. They run parallel and switch depending on the environment or person I’m with.
There are channels for;
My high school classmates
Clients meeting for the first time
My mother
Friends I meet through work
Café staff
Friends some years older
When a friend is with me at work or on a business call, the channels misalign, and I feel a little embarrassed.
Conversely, sometimes when I notice someone has a different expression or speaks differently than usual, I find them attractive.
I look at them thinking, “I've never seen her make that expression before.” An unfamiliar face, an unfamiliar voice.
When taking portraits, there are moments when, unexpectedly, the subject’s channels change. Sometimes it lasts a while; other times, it’s just a blink of an eye.
Occasionally, the channel I’ve been tuned into suddenly shifts. I feel the difference, and I can’t take my eyes off it.
It might be self-delusion, but I find the change fascinating. It makes shooting more enjoyable. I trust my intuition.
I never try to change their channels myself. I just let them change by themselves.
Wanting to capture those channel-changing moments is one of the reasons why I photograph. Also, I'm simply interested in people, and I like people.
